BT is switching off the PSTN and ISDN networks. This is already underway, with the current schedule aiming to complete the switch-off across the whole UK by January 2027.
They’re replacing this with an all-fibre network. So, internet connectivity will be all fibre, and all calls will have to be routed online. It’s a big change, but there’s good news too: this will enable you to access better, more effective technology. We’re going to walk you through what this means for your business, and how you can get ahead of the curve.
If you’re relying on ISDN or PSTN lines, yes. It could affect your ability to make and take calls, and connect to the internet. It could also affect many other services that rely on traditional copper cable infrastructure.
Do you know what type of broadband connection you’re on? Well, if you’re not sure, you need to check. If you’re on an ADSL or FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) connection, you’re going to have to upgrade to full-fibre broadband.
Are your calls routed online? If not, then you’ll need to ensure it is. A cloud phone system is a great way to do this. You can find out more about these here.
And it doesn’t stop there. The PSTN switch off will impact alarm systems, fax machines, printers and even some card machines (vital to service industries who rely on this technology for generating income!)
Take a deep breath, it’s all going to be ok. We’ve got your back! Your first step:
Assess your technology to get a scope of what products will be impacted by the ISDN/PSTN switch-off. If you aren’t sure, don’t panic! Our expert team can talk you through your inventory and get down to the nitty gritty.
Next: Map out the needs of your team. Do you have remote workers? Do you want unified
communications? Do you need handsets? How much value would call analytics be for your cloud phone system? Discover the benefits of a cloud phone system.
January 2027 feels a long way away, but you need to act now. Burying your head in the sand could result in bigger costs and complications down the line. Last-minute surges of organisations trying switch to future-proof connectivity and technology could mean that market prices spike, putting you at risk of rushing into the wrong provider and paying more than you should.
Alongside this, leaving things too late could cause disruption to your business. Plus, you might be in a full fibre area, so why wait to experience the benefits? Contact us to see what’s available in your region and to get a tailored cloud phone system set up for your team.
There’s no one-size-fits-all cloud phone system. You’ll need to think about your industry, the size of your company, whether your team work remotely, whether you handle lots of customer calls… the list goes on.
Cloud phone systems are reliable, with a monthly payment model, which allows you to have spread out, predictable costs over time.
And with the bolt-ons and additional features (not available on on-premise technology), your business can experience increased productivity and efficiency.
